Aesthetics is a modern term for a branch of philosophy whose focus is what traditionally has been called Beauty, and for Beauty's antithesis, the Ugly. In recent times however, the concepts of Beauty and the Ugly have been criticised for many reasons, not the least of which is the pejorative nature of the the term 'ugly'. As a result, other terms have been proposed; and here we too will propose a new pair of terms to set in place of the traditional two. These new terms—the 'Awesome' and the 'Awful'—are much more comprehensive, as well as less bound to the limited notions of what the terms 'Beauty' and 'the Ugly' have traditionally meant. Admittedly, these terms are themselves somewhat objectionable, due to their currency in popular culture; but these terms are nevertheless justified in the field of Aesthetics, with its basis in Emotion. And, as any new set of terms with the appropriate polar relationship and suitable meanings would suffice, these two terms cannot be objected to upon purely academic grounds. What is more, using these two new terms to replace the traditional two allows us to use the two traditional terms in a more limited but certainly more appropriate way. Accordingly, here, 'Beauty' and 'Ugly' will serve to denote qualities that are but two among the many qualities that contribute to the complex fabric of the Awesome and the Awful. |
