Minimum Student Skills: This is a college level course that is not self-paced. Discipline regarding time and effort are necessary to succeed. Regular practice is strongly encouraged. Plan to spend at least 12 hours a week in the course, keeping up with the week’s sections to be covered. Follow the “Course Calendar” to know what needs to be completed on a weekly basis. Due dates must be observed and respected. An online course is not for everybody. Please go to http://online.collin.edu/eLC_smartermeasure.html to assess your online learning readiness through SmartMeasure.
Netiquette Expectations:
Academic Dishonesty: If a student is found responsible for academic dishonesty, a penalty ranging from a 0 on an assignment to an F in the course will be assigned based on the instructor’s interpretation of the severity of the situation.
Course Resources: The MyMathLab Access Code you will need can be purchased at the college's bookstore or online. The eBook College Algebra (3rd edition) developed for online delivery by Kirk Trigsted is contained in MyMathLab. Please refer to the Canvas document under START HERE titled "Online College Algebra: Getting Started" for more information.
Supplies: TI graphing calculator (83 or 84) is preferred and supported by tutorials.
Method of Evaluation: The grade you earn in this course will be determined by the points you earn as follows:

Competency-based Learning Modules with Mastery Testing:
The mathematical content of the course is housed inside MyMathLab <click>. You will be responsible to register in MyMathLab using the pin number assigned to you through your Student Access Kit. This code may be purchased online or through the bookstore. The course ID for this class will be sent directly to you when you fulfill a set of tasks as specified on a letter sent to you via Cougarmail by your instructor.
The material is divided into 4 modules with various sections in each module, as follows:
Module 1 - Chapter 3 (6 sections)
Module 2 - Chapter 4 (6 sections)
Module 3 - Chapter 5 (5 sections)
Module 4 - Section 7.3, 9.1, 9.2, 9.3 (4 sections)
Each module starts with a Module Diagnostic which serves as a Pre-Test that will adapt the assignments to the level of mastery.
Then the student will Read & Interact in each assigned section by reading, watching videos, and interacting with animations and try-it exercises. The Reading Assessment will keep the student accountable for the material and must be completed in order to begin the section by section Assigned Homework. Please note that the assignments will not be able to be accessed without completion of the Reading Assessment.
Since there will be a MyMathLab assignment for every section, each week work on the assignments corresponding to the sections to study. All of the corresponding module's assignments and lab will be open on the Monday marking the beginning of a new module. The specific module's assignments and lab will open all at once in case you want to work ahead. Due dates are each Sunday by 11:59 p.m. as specified on the calendar or otherwise noted. There are weekly due dates. Please try to keep up with the weekly schedule.
Once all sections in each module have been completed, the student will complete the module's Lab, which will serve as a module review. This lab will consist of a sampling of the module's homework assignment problems. An 85% minimum mastery level must be attained to proceed to the module's Proctored Exam.
All 4 modules' Proctored Exams and the Comprehensive Final must be taken at a proctored site, such as Collin College's Testing Centers or a pre-arranged educational site. These exams are password-protected online MyMathLab exams. Please note that there are no exam re-takes in math at Collin. Students will see "two attempts" on their screens only for proctors' use when experiencing technical difficulties. For alternate accommodations, please contact your professor. Questions will be very similar to those found in the assignments. Exams are available for one week starting on a Friday and ending on a Thursday (the Final is due on a Tuesday). Exams are due at 9 p.m. on the due date.
Requirements for Participation in Online Discussion or Collaborative Activities: Occasionally you will be required to participate in online discussion as part of your assignments. Discussions will take place in Canvas. Everyone is expected to participate. Netiquette must be observed. Criteria Used to Evaluate Participation in Such Activities: The minimum number of words or comments specified in the assignment must be observed to get full credit for discussions.
COAT ASSESSMENT: Occasionally, courses at Collin are selected to participate in a COAT (Core Objectives Assessment Team) Assessment. I will attach it inside MyMathLab under Document Sharing when it becomes available and send you a message to remind you. This is not an optional activity. It will be part of your grade.
Pacing in this online course environment:
Consider that a typical face-to-face student will be expected to attend 3 hours of lecture a week plus at least 3 hours per hour of class studying and doing homework assignments outside of class. It is then not unrealistic to expect an online student to spend at least 12 hours a week on this course. This online course is not self-paced; there are due dates that must be met. To best pace yourself, follow the proposed weekly course schedule at the bottom of this syllabus.
Delivery Method of
Feedback and/or Graded Material:
All material will be graded within MyMathLab. Grades will be posted inside the
MyMathLab grade book automatically. Discussion points will be added by the
instructor at the end of the discussion session.
Standards for
Instructor Response and Availability:
Grades are automatically posted except for discussion grades which will be
manually added. Emails will be answered in a timely manner within 24 hours.
Face-to-face office hours will be observed as well as virtual office hours upon
request.
Setting yourself up for success in mathematics: All students are expected to study daily for this course. The material you learn today, will be used tomorrow. If you find that you need extra help, please:
· Contact me during my office during office hours and I will help you. Or send me an e-mail through Cougarmail with your course/section in the heading. Use the "Ask My Instructor" tab within MyMathLab to provide me with a link for your specific problem.
· Pearson Education (publishers of your e-book) offers tutoring by phone, email, or fax as well as 24/7 technical support (details inside MyMathLab and in the "Getting Started" document in BlackBoard.
· Take advantage of the Math Lab. It is a free tutoring center for math students enrolled at Collin. There are math labs on all three campuses. Click on the following link for information on hours and locations: http://www.collin.edu/academics/programs/resources_DevEdMathLab.pdf
· The ACCESS office of Collin College also provides free tutoring services, including 24/7 NetTutor. Check http://www.collin.edu/studentresources/tutoring/index.html for more information.
· If you need help with math or test anxiety, study skills, time management, stress, depression, loss/grief, etc. please contact Counseling at http://www.collin.edu/studentresources/counseling/index.html
· Form an online study group with a few classmates. The best way to learn is to teach.
