Body Plane Identification Experiments

In order to understand the various body planes, the students will use various foods to dissect along specific plane paths. Foods needed : eggs, oranges, apples, and pears. Other equipment: kitchen knife, cutting board, rinse water

            A. Take two boiled chicken eggs, cool, and peal away the shell.

        1) With the first egg, make a parasaggital incision along the long access and a second midsaggital incision.

       2) With the second egg, make a dorsal transverse incision at the apical edge and a mid transverse incision.

When did you only see cooked egg white?  When did you see cooked egg white and yolk?    Why?

            B. Take two oranges of the same size, do not peal them, but wash them thoroughly

                        1) Make a midtransverse cut through one orange

                        2) Make a transverse cut through the second orange

How do these slices compare?  How do these slices differ?  How do the compartments look?

C. Take two pears of the same size and wash them thoroughly

1) Make an oblique cut through the midpoint of one.

2) Make another oblique cut through one of the ends of the second pear.

How do these slices compare? How do these slices differ?

            D. Take two apples (any size, any color) and wash them thoroughly.

                        1) Take one apple and make a frontal slice through.

                        2) Take a second apple and make a midsaggital cut through?

How do these slices compare?  When would a frontal “cut” show something different than a sagittal one?

            D. The following photos show various models

                        1)  Identify the body planes shown here.

                        2)  Identify the body regions shown here.
