1. Describe the organization of the nervous system, both structural and functional.

2. Regarding nervous tissue :

            a) Name 4  neuroglial cells, their structure and function

            b) Give the general anatomy of a neuron, their functional and structural classification.

3. Regarding nervous physiology:

            a) define related terms (bold face term in textbook)

            b) know the three  ions involved and direction of movement

            c) synapse definition and general components of a synapse

4. Define reflex and name the 5 components of a reflex arc.  Give the  two major functional classifications of reflexes and an example of each.

5. Regarding the CNS :

            a) know embryonic development : regions and spaces/chambers

            b) know the  3 connective tissue coverings (meninges) and function,

c) know 3 other protection mechanisms for the CNS

            d) know cerebral hemispheres, lobes, gross anatomy and function, general histology.

For cerebral lobes : know primary and association function for each of the

four lobes.

            e) know the parts of the diencephalon; their location, names, and function

            f) know the parts of the brainstem; their location, names, and function

            g) know the gross anatomy and function of the cerebellum

            h) know the source and function of cerebral spinal fluid

            i) know the gross & histological anatomy and regions of the spinal cord

            j) know 2 aging changes and 2 conditions / diseases seen with the brain and spinal cord.

            k) define EEG and name two brain waves seen on a normal tracing.

6. Regarding the PNS :

            a) Know the 12 pairs of cranial nerves : name, number, nerve type, function, and test

            b) know the gross and histological structure of nerve roots and spinal nerves

            c) know the name and number of spinal nerves

            d) define spinal nerve plexus and give the four regions where they occur

            e) define nerve and its connective tissue coverings.

            f) Compare and contrast the autonomic and somatic nervous motor divisions

            g) name the divisions of the ANS and their generalized body functions

h) Describe the general sympathetic & parasympathetic pathways and specific organ functions.

            i) Know the two neurotransmitters involved with the ANS motor divisions  & function.

            j) Know the  higher control for the ANS and ANS reflexes

            k) know 2 conditions / diseases seen with the PNS

7. Explain the relationship between the nervous system and other body systems.
