Lecture Review : Acid, Base, pH, Fluid balance
Dr. Weis

1. Know water regulation and movement between fluid compartments.

2. Know electrolyte regulation for Na+ and K+.

3. Define pH, acid, base, buffer, electrolyte, salt

4. Know 2 of the 3 chemical buffer solutions and be able to name or give the chemical formula for their weak acid and weak base, know where they are located, how effective a chemical buffer it is (pK) and why.

5. Acid/ Base control from the respiratory system : know control and regulation of the respiratory system of the respiratory system regarding ventilation and CO2 levels.

 (review respiratory notes if needed).

6. Know the CO2 formula and be able to explain how changes in respiration cause changes in pCO2, H+, pH and how these are related.

7. Know acid/base control from renal mechanisms :: how do the kidneys regulate pH, renal tubular buffer systems.

8. Know problems with acid/base regulation : acidosis and alkalosis.  Know causes for these problems for respiratory acidosis, metabolic acidosis, respiratory alkalosis, metabolic alkalosis.

9. Know compensatory mechanisms.

10. Name two aging changes that will affect acid/base balance.
