BIOL 2402 A&P II                  Lecture Review Questions                    Endocrine System

Dr. Weis

1. Compare and contrast the endocrine and nervous systems with regards to tissue, chemical, location, etc.

2. Give the general function of the endocrine system

3. Completely and accurately define hormone.

4. Know the chemical classifications of hormones (amino acid, protein, steroid) in regards to structure and function and solubility (fat vs water) and how solubility deals with messenger systems.

5. Discuss receptor location and interactions with signal transduction mechanisms.  Know how the messenger systems for direct gene activation and secondary messenger systems generally work.

6. For the three types of secondary messenger systems : pick one and discribe/discuss it IN DETAIL !!

7. Describe in detail the hypothalamic control over the pituitary (AP and PP)

8. Recognize and know what RH and IH mean and refer to and when they are used.

9. Know ALL the pituitary hormones :: two storage hormones from PP and the A6" from AP in regards to names, chemical class, solubility, receptor interactions, function at target tissue(s).

10. Know the endocrine glands structure (location, gross, histo) and function (physiology), the hormones secreted, effects on target organ(s), problems.   Glands to know : thyroid, parathyroid, ADRENAL pancreas, gonads, thymus.

11. Know the names of other organs/tissues that have endocrine functions.

12. Define Homeostasis and give the major systems responsible for its control and communication.

13. Name two aging changes seen with the Endocrine system (think about secretion, receptor interactions)

14. Name a problem with each of the hormones secreted from the classical endocrine glands.

You may use English to name and explain or the correct medical term (hyper, hypo will be used frequently)
