Material Covered
Safety: Be able to identify and describe the use of various safety procedures
and equipment in the lab
Microscopy: Be able to identify microscope parts and give the definitions
of important microscopy principles
Stains:
- Define stain and give the two major types based on their chemistry
- Know the difference between Simple Stains, Differential Stains, and
Special Stains
- Know what stain is used for the various staining procedures and why
- Define mordant
- Describe 2 problems that you might encounter while performing a staining
procedure
Culture Techniques
- Be able to show or describe proper transfer techniques between different
media
- Be able to show or describe proper streaking procedures to obtain isolated
colonies on agar media
Microorganisms
- Be able to identify and describe organism growth and reactions on media
of all types
- Be able to identify and describe physical factors (nutrient source, temperature,
pH, oxygen, etc.) of microorganisms
- Be able to identify and explain specific tests to determine normal flora
and pathogenic microorganisms
- Be able to interpret antimicrobial chemotherapy results on a Kirby Bauer
test
