Microbiology Lab Practical Two
Format:
Material Covered
Know any and all media used this semester regarding
- What the media is used for (growth, selective, etc.)
- How a positive or negative result looks like using that media (recognize
and identify)
- Explain the reason for the result (specific reason why you got a positive
or negative result)
- Examples
- Unacceptable = "The bug used the stuff in the tube to grow"
- Acceptable = "This bacteria was able to breakdown or hydrolyze
starch using the enzyme amylase. A positive result is indicated by
a clear zone around the bacterial growth after iodine is added to
the media."
Be able to define terms such as respiration, hydrolysis, enzyme (just to
name a few)
Be able to identify a bacteria based on its gram stain, media results,
etc. using the appropriate I.D. chart
Be able to tell the real names of the reagents used in the biochemical
tests (ie. NOT Nitrate "A", real name is?)
Be able to give examples of different bacteria that might be involved with
- Food borne Illnesses
- Water contamination
- STDs
- Infectious Disease for each body system
- Transformation
- Food Production (cheese, wine, beer, yogurt, etc.)
