BIOL 2421 Microbiology
Lecture Review
Chapter 3
Dr. Weis

1. Describe the bacterial shapes using the three major categories and list their variations regarding arrangement and number.

2. List the Eubacterial cell wall appendages.  Describe their specific structure and function. Give an example of bacteria that might have an example of each type of an appendage.  Be able to discuss the pathogenicity of each type of cell wall appendage.

3. Be able to name the types of movement and the reasons a bacteria would move.

4. Describe the detailed structure of a bacterial cell wall, listing the components and their functions for the G (-) and G (+) bacteria, and Acid Fast Bacteria.

5. Give the structures and function of the cell (plasma) membrane and the cytoplasm

6. Describe the formation and reasons that bacteria form endospores. Give an example of a bacterium that has the ability to form spores.  Be able to discuss the importance of spore formation in disease processes.

7. Describe the specific structures of the nucleoid area of a Eubacteria.  How does it compare and differ from a eukaryotic cell.

8. Describe the general events of bacterial reproduction.  List and define other means of genetic recombination.

9. Define generation time, how it is expressed, and the phases of the growth curve that are created.  Be able to list several ways of measuring microbial growth, both directly and indirectly.

10. Be able to list and discuss the specific bacterial groups based on physical and chemical requirements.

11. Be able to list and discuss the media used in bacterial cultivation.

12. Overall: Be prepared to compare and contrast Eukarya with Eubacteria.

                        a) Size

                        b) Shape

            c) Structures (specific)

            d) Function (of specific structures)

            e) Reproduction

13. Explain the dyes, steps, results, and importance of the Gram stain
