Study Tips

  • Attending class is critical to your success. It is not only a primer for your book reading, but a chance to ask questions.

  • Understanding the class material during the lecture is not enough. Lack of daily study could result in failure. Studying the night before the exam will only result in being tired for the test.

  • The course material will be always used later in the class so take a consistent approach to class preparation. If you just cram the night before the exam, even if you succeed to memorize the material for the test day, it will result in trouble at the following exams.

  • Focus on understanding the concepts and not memorizing how to solve the problem. Mastering a concept will allow you to solve any kind of problem using that concept even if it is very different from the examples presented in class and in the book.

  • Solving the homework problems should be made a part of the daily study. First go over the lecture notes and the examples making sure you understood the concept and then follow the steps to solve the problem. Looking over a solution is not enough - it always makes sense when it is already solved. You have to be able to solve the problem without looking over the solution.

  • The homework problems assigned are the minimum that should be solved. It is recommended that you solve additional problems, particularly when preparing for exams.
