The twenty-two letters form part of what the Book Of Formation calls the thirty-two amazing paths of wisdom.5 The remaining ten paths are the ten original numbers or spheerote (often transliterated as 'sefiroth'), shown in the previous panel. From these thirty-two paths Yahweh formed the world. As the figure shows (Fig. 2, but see also the lower part of Fig. 1 on the previous page), the last six of the Ten Spheerote form a three dimensional axis-system, with the spheerote at the ends of the axes pointing in the six directions. This is the underlying framework of an octahedron. In the Yetzirah, the twelve Simple Letters are said to be founded on the "twelve oblique borders", the "borders of the world".6 These two curious phrases refer to the twelve edges of the octahedron. The six directions of Chapter One of the Yetzirah are the six corners of the octahedron. Evidently God formed the world in the shape that Plato attributed to the atoms of Air; and according to the Book Of Formation, the Creator used the three Mother Letters to form the three axes of the octahedron, the seven Double Letters for the seven points (with the center), and the twelve Simple Letters for the twelve edges or oblique borders.
