The Divine Names Page 10

The first of the Worlds—the World of Emmanation—bears the Divine Names, a doctrine that seems not to have been well understood by Christian Qabbalists. The Divine Name attributed to the first spheerah, the Supreme Crown (Fig. 7) is the name AHYH ('ehee-EI' = 'I shall be'). This word is a form of the root HWH ('ha-WAH' = 'to be'), and the initial 'A' indicates the first person singular form of the verb. This name should be translated as "I Am", and is the name of God as only He can pronounce it. When, for instance, Moses asked God to tell him His name, "AHYH"—"I-Am"—is what the Lord replied. The names for the other spheerote derive from two basic roots: YH ('yah', a particle of the verb 'to be') and AL ('el' = 'god', 'elevate',or 'power').18 The nature of the outer two columns of the Tree of Life reflects these two meanings, and it can be seen from Qabbalistic writings that the names most commonly assigned to the spheerote on these two columns consisted of several different expansions of these two roots. For, on the one hand, YH, Yah, a name found in the Book Of Formation and which connotes life (or being), suggests the right column, the Column of Mercy (the columns are named after their middle spheerote, see Fig. 4). On the other hand, AL, El, a name often used in the Torah as well as other Semitic writings of the Near East, means God or Ruler, and suggests the left column, that of Strength.19
